Greenheart covers greenspaces across the Wigan Borough from Pennington Flash in Leigh, to Wigan Flashes in central Wigan, all the way up to Haigh Woodland Park. The Greenheart area includes plenty of beautiful parks, woodlands, wetlands, canals and green spaces for you to visit. There is so much to see and discover, whether you want to spend a whole day exploring with the family, discovering some of the amazing wildlife in Wigan or having a leisurely stroll.
Many of the sites that lie at the heart of Greenheart were once the mining and textile industries driving growth and development in the borough. When these traditional industries declined and the mines closed, large areas of empty land were left behind.
Developing Greenheart
Since the 1970s the council and its partners have been working to improve these areas. Many have developed into exciting natural environments over the years, rich in wildlife and diverse habitats. The canals that run through Greenheart have seen investment, along with other routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, improving accessibility and connectivity between the Greenheart sites.
Greenheart sites are continually being managed and enhanced by a number of partners working in Wigan such as Lancashire Wildlife Trust, Groundwork CLM, Natural England and numerous volunteer groups. Key partners sit on the Greenheart Partnership Board and lead on steering the programme, helping to make sure Greenheart can continue to achieve its aims.
