A Leigh v Wigan final, can it happen?

A Leigh v Wigan final, can it happen?

A good place to start this month is with the Leigh Leopards as the momentum for Adrian Lam’s squad continues to build after another successful weekend.

It’s fantastic to see both Leigh and Wigan in the Challenge Cup semi-finals after a pair of hard-fought victories.

Although both sides have tough matches to come, we can all keep dreaming of an all-Wigan Borough cup final at Wembley in August – what a day that would be for all involved!

An early reminder for a date in your diary is the Flashes Festival of Nature, held at Pennington Flash (11am to 3pm) on Sunday, July 16.

It will be a free event to celebrate the site’s designation as part of the National Nature Reserve with a host of nature-themed activities for all the family.

This upcoming weekend also sees us come together to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

It’s always an important date in the calendar and provides an opportunity for our communities to unite and show support for our forces personnel and veterans.

Having been hosted in Leigh last year, it’s over in Wigan town centre this time around, but we are encouraging everyone across the borough to attend.

The parade through the town centre – from 11am – will include brass band music, cadet organisations and veterans’ groups.

Throughout the day there’s a busy schedule of family-fun and entertainment with stalls, fairground attractions and military vehicles.

This is also a good time to remind everyone to take advantage of the free town centre parking in Leigh and Wigan town centres at weekends.

I would like to conclude this month’s column with an important message for readers who are in the age group to claim pension credit.

It is estimated that around 4,000 Wigan Borough pensioners aren't claiming for pension credit when they are eligible, leaving millions left unclaimed.

If you have reached state pension age or if you are a couple and you both have reached state pension age you may be eligible for pension credit.

Claiming is simple and the average pension credit claimant receives over £50 per week.

If you aren’t sure if you’re entitled, we encourage you to still apply.
