Memory Walks and another Blue Plaque

Memory Walks and another Blue Plaque

Summer saw a resurgence last week so I hope you got to enjoy the hot weather, it may not seem like it at the moment but the autumn months are just around the corner.

September will see Wigan Council support the Memory Walk initiative led by the local authority’s Be Well team, helping to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society.

It’s a cause that many of us will have a personal connection with and I hope that many residents can sign up and raise support for a worthy charity.

On Friday, September 29, please join us for a sponsored walking event in Pennington Hall Park. This is preceded by a similar Memory Walk day at Haigh Hall on Sunday, September 24.

An eagerly awaited date on the horizon is Friday, September 22 when Leigh Leopards welcome Wigan Warriors to Leigh Sports Village.

It’s a huge game, not just because of the borough rivalry, but with both teams looking to secure the best possible route to a potential Grand Final.

As with the previous games between the two clubs this year, we are all working together to promote the work of the brilliant Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre (WLCC).

Please keep an eye out on our channels in the build-up to the match – there will be plenty of opportunities to show your support.

Earlier this month, it was fantastic to see the unveiling of a heritage Blue Plaque for the renowned architect JC Prestwich, an important figure in the history of Leigh.

A remarkably gifted individual, he is responsible for the design of many civic buildings – including Leigh Town Hall – and it is fitting to have this permanent reminder of his work.

Wigan Borough’s blue plaque scheme is something we’re proud of each year as it’s an important way to keep the link between the past and present.

It sees permanent memorials installed in public places, highlighting the impact recipients have made on local heritage and culture.
