Residents' joy after roundabout is installed at notorious junction

Residents have praised a councillor for all her efforts after a much-needed roundabout was constructed on a busy Wigan road.

The roundabout on Swan Meadow Lane is on a bend and has been the scene for a few crashes with speeding motorists not anticipating the sharp turn.

But concerns have been put at ease thanks to the introduction of a roundabout after Cllr Pat Draper ensured those living on the street were heard.

The Douglas councillor and residents say they can already notice the marked difference in the slowed speed of drivers.

Cllr Pat Draper said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see the roundabout in place now.

“Before the roundabout was constructed this road was the scene for many broken walls with cars speeding around the bend.

“Now, you can see the massive difference the roundabout has made with cars slowing down on approach.

“I would like to thank the traffic department for the implementation of the roundabout in a very short space of time and the residents who campaigned hard for it. It shows what can be done when councillors, residents and Wigan Council work together.”

Local resident Ray Birchall who lives on Swan Meadow Road, has given thanks to the Douglas councillor for ensuring the roundabout is now on the busy road.

He said: “I am over the moon that our road has got this roundabout to help prevent more accidents from happening.

“I would like to thank Cllr Draper for all her efforts in pursuing the matter for us.

“As soon as we mentioned it to her she was straight on the case and she has delivered on what she said she would do.”
