The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works.
This bulletin is updated weekly and every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.
For any emergency work that has a major impact on the road network, we aim to notify members of the public via Wigan Council's social media pages as soon as possible.
Emergency Works
- Leigh Road, Hindley Green - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by Electricity North West with temporary signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 16th April 2024
- Whelley, Wigan - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by Cadent Gas with temporary signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 19th April 2024.
Major Schemes
- Ince Green Lane, Ince in Makerfield - Network Rail will be undertaking works to electrify the railway which includes the demolition and rebuilding of the existing railway bridge. The works will include the use of a road closure and will commence on 22nd April 2024 for a period of 31 weeks. - Atherleigh Way, Leigh - Electricity North West will be undertaking works to upgrade electric cables to avoid loss of services for over 1,000 properties - The works will include the use of temporary multi-way traffic signals, and will commence on 6th May 2024 and are due to be completed by 24th May 2024
- Pepper Lane, Standish - Cadent Gas will be undertaking gas mains reinforcement works which will replace the existing gas mains with new PE Plastic gas mains. These are essential works due to faults on the existing gas main that risks over 1000 properties losing gas supply. The works will include the use of temporary multi-way traffic signals, and will commence on 13th April 2024 and are due to be completed by 11th June 2024. - Woodhouse Lane / Springfield Road / Park Road - Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to upgrade the existing 4-Way Traffic Signals and install pedestrian crossings at the junction of Springfield Road, Woodhouse Lane and Park Road. The works will include the use of temporary multi-way traffic signals, and will commence on 7th May 2024 and are due to be completed by 7th June 2024.

- Meanley Street, Tyldesley will be closed for works on Tyldesley Library from 8th January to 14th April 2024
- Millgate, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Standishgate to its junction with Hewlett Street on 19th February to 21st April 2024
- East Lancashire Road, Lowton will be closed at its junction with Newton Road for Left Turn Only on 07th May 2024 to 15th May 2024 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:00 only
- Church Lane, Lowton will be closed outside House Number 70 to Outside House Number 72 on 19th May 2024 from 09:00 to 15:00
- Wigan Road, Shevington will be closed 91 meters from House Number 75 on 23rd May to 24th May 2024 for a period of 1 Night between the hours of 21:00 and 5:00
- Rectory Lane, Standish will be closed at the railway bridge on 16th June 2024 from 09:00 to 15:00
- Higher Green Lane, Tyldesley will be closed one way from Outside House Number 59a to its junction with Manor Road on 02nd July 2024 to 04th July 2024.
Resurfacing Schemes
- Alford Way, Byley Rise, Calveley Walk and Romiley Square, Standish will be closed on 2nd April to 17th May between the hours of 07:30 and 16:00
- Liverpool Road, Ashton in Makerfield will be closed from its junction with Satinwood Close to the St Helens Boundary (M6 Junction 24 Northbound Sliproad) on 15th April to 17th April between the hours of 21:00 and 04.00
- Swinley Road, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Kenyon Road to outside House Number 92 on 22nd April to 24th April 2024 between the hours of 08:00 and 17:00
- Wallgate, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Queen Street to Outside Wigan North Western Train Station on 24th April and 25th April 2024 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00
- Powell Street, Wigan will be closed at its junction with A49 Riverway Junction on 24th April, 25th April and 29th April 2024 between the hours of 21:00 and 04.00
- Back Lane, Appley Bridge will be closed from its junction with Crow Orchard Road to Outside the Pumping Station on 29th April to 3rd May between the hours of 09:30 and 15:00 Only
- Montose Avenue, Wigan from its junction with Greenwood Avenue to its junction with Matheson Drive on 2nd May to 7th May between the hours of 09:30 and 15:00 Only.
- Billinge Road, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Tunstall Lane, Wigan to its junction with St Matthews Close on consecutive Sundays on 12th May and 19th May 2024 between the hours of 08:00 and 18:00
- Newton Road, Lowton will be closed from its junction with Sandy Lane to outside House Number 476 on consecutive Sundays on 9th June and 16th June 2024 between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
- St Helens Road, Leigh will be closed from its junction with Sandy Lane to outside House Number 476 on consecutive Sundays on 9th June and 16th June 2024 between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
- Manchester Road, Tyldesley will be closed from outside House Number 176 to its junction with Hough Lane on consecutive Sundays on 16th June and 23rd June 2024 between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
- Frog Lane, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Proes Court to its junction with Lower St Stephens Street on consecutive Sundays on 30th June and 7th July 2024 between the hours of 08:00 and 19:00
- Firs Lane, Leigh will be closed from its junction with Cunliffe Street to its junction with Charity Street on 6th July and 7th July between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
- Atherleigh Way, Atherton will be closed from its junction with Lovers Lane to Lighting Column no. 160 on 10th July, 11th July, 17th July and 18th July 2024 between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00am
- Church Lane, Shevington will be closed on 22nd July and 23rd July 2024 between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00.

- Boys Brigade Parade – Atherton Road, Hindley Green from St Johns Church and Organ Street, Organ Street and Thomas Street will be closed from 11:10 and 11:25 on the following dates: May 11th, June 9th 2024
- Aspull Churches Walking Day - A number of roads in Aspull will be closed on Sunday 2nd June 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00 in support of Aspull Churches Walking Day
- Hindley Churches Walking Day - A number of roads in Hindley will be closed on Sunday 9th June 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00 in support of Hindley Churches Walking Day
- Shevington Fete - A one way system will be in place on Church Lane, Shevington from its junction with Churchfield to the roundabout which meets Broad O’Th Lane and Shevington Lane on Saturday 22nd June 2024 from 07:00 to 17:00 in support of Shevington Fete
- Atherton Carnival - A number of roads will be closed in Atherton will be closed on Sunday 23rd June 2024 from 12:00 to 13:00 in support of Atherton Carnival
- JJ Wigan Bike Ride - A number of road closures will be in place on Sunday 23rd June 2024 from 09:00 to 12:00 to support JJ Wigan Bike Ride

- Strawberry Fair - Danes Avenue, Hindley on 14th July 2024 between the hours of 10:00 and 17:00 in support of Strawberry Fair 2024.
