Teaching Resources

Enable your students to expand their understanding of air pollution and climate change on a global, national and local scale.

Take the opportunity to utilise live data feeds from across Wigan Borough, and apply them to your lessons.

The Air Quality for Wigan Borough Scheme of Works (SoW) aims to develop Key Stage 3 students' understanding of the impact they can have on their community and the environment around them.

The SoW contains:

Air Pollution Module

Four, one-hour lessons, giving a background and foundation understanding to air pollution. This includes methods for measuring and identifying air pollution, and ultimately mitigating its impact.

Climate Change Module

Four, one-hour lessons, giving a background and foundation understanding to climate change, its links to air pollution and the effects it has on the local community. Before sharing learnings on how we can overcome some of the challenges.

The following modules aim to build a strong foundational knowledge of the impacts of individuals, business and governments on air pollution and climate change. The lessons aim to provide applications of this knowledge to the local area, and provide actionable changes that will work to reduce air pollution and climate change. The following models link to the UK curriculum, specifically in:

  • Geography Programme of Study: Key Stage 3
  • Science Programme of Study: Key Stage 3

Find all of the links to the UK curriculum, in the Scheme of Works.
