About the Scheme

The aim of the Leigh Town Centre Building Grant Scheme is to improve and regenerate Leigh by bringing out the best in the historic environment, to increase the attractiveness and vitality of the town centre.

A total fund of around £1m from UK Government Funding, will provide grant to deliver a range of repair and conservation work to retail and other business premises within the town centre, particularly within the Conservation Areas around Railway Road and Bradshawgate.

The project is planned to complete in March 2026 and all grant funding must be spent by then.

In the autumn of 2024 we opened our expression of interest process where property owners and businesses could apply for inclusion within the grant scheme.

We received expressions of interest for over 61 buildings in Leigh Town Centre which was beyond our expectations and really showed the passion and interest of building owners who wanted to invest in their properties.

Each application was assessed against a strict criteria to make sure that the project would enhance the town centre and was of good enough quality to be funded. This process also made sure that the applicant was willing to match-fund their own contribution to the project.

The expression of interest phase has now closed and our project managers, Creative Heritage Consultants will be working with the successful 27 properties to bring their projects forward.

What work will be done?

Funding of upto 90% has been made available for conservation-led repairs and improvements to commercial properties located within the priority area. These could include:

  • Shopfronts and traditional signwriting.
  • Enhancing existing historic features e.g. windows, doors, brickwork, timber details, etc
  • High level joinery
  • Awnings.

Works not eligible for grant:

  • Complete re-roofing and internal refurbishment
  • Work that has already begun
  • Works that do not have the relevant planning approval (and listed building consent where applicable)
  • Some of this work might take place alongside the scheme but it will be funded by the owners themselves and not from the grant.

The project is planned to complete in March 2026 and all grant funding must be spent by then. Help and support will be provided by the Consultant Project Manager if required, see contact details below.
