Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) has committed to the NHS Net Zero agenda. Significant changes to sites are being implemented to ensure that the trust can achieve Net Zero by 2038. This is a large piece of work that will require input from staff, patients, members of the public and the many businesses that form part of the NHS supply chain.
The trust has implemented a new Environmental and Sustainability Manager to lead this piece of work, so expect to see more news and exciting projects over the coming months.
What are we doing?
Upgrading heat and power
WWL is currently upgrading its heat and power systems on its Royal Albert Edward site in central Wigan. The boilers are being exchanged for newer efficient boilers and a Combined Heat and Power unit. As well as generating the electricity needed for the site, this will capture waste heat from the engine and utilises it to provide heating and hot water.
The new unit will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1500 tonnes per year and improve the air quality around the site. The unit is expected to be operational in early 2022.
Installing innovative lighting
WWL is also installing an innovative lighting product produced by Siemens subsidiary Enlighted. The lighting unit reduces electricity use on site through application of tried and tested LED technology. The unit comes with a range of sensors that adjust light levels based on the brightness of light and the occupancy in a room.
The sensors will also monitor temperature, space utilisation, and allow the trust to track important assets across the site, such as expensive medical equipment. This project will significantly reduce WWLs carbon footprint, bills and free up members of staff from trying to find items which have been misplaced.
