Culture and art

French Week

French Week

We are happy to celebrate French culture and Wigan’s twin town, Angers, in March 2025 with a programme composed of exciting events for everyone. The programme will be announced in early 2025.

On this page you will find cultural projects to help you explore our twin town and the wonderful artists from Angers.

DeafDeafDeaf at Temporives Festival

On Wednesday 24th July, the alternative rock band DeafDeafDeaf from Wigan and Leigh delivered a high-energy performance at the Temporives Festival in Angers. The event took place in the picturesque Fine-Arts garden, adding a charming backdrop to the evening's musical festivities. Angers, being Wigan's twin town, made the concert especially meaningful, highlighting the cultural exchange between the two communities. DeafDeafDeaf's powerful performance captivated the audience, creating an unforgettable experience for festivalgoers with vibrant rock vibes.DeafDeafDeaf on stage performing at temporives festival

Before their evening concert, DeafDeafDeaf spent time with local children at a leisure centre situated in the heart of a park in Angers. They played and sang some of their songs, engaging the kids in a lively musical experience. They happily answered questions, sharing insights into their music and lives as musicians, and enjoyed a meal together, fostering a sense of connection and community.

This visit was part of the many twinning projects between Wigan and Angers this year, underscoring the ongoing commitment to strengthening international bonds through cultural exchange and shared experiences.

Dupin & Duclos participatory mural

As part of French Week celebrations, an Angers artists duo called Dupin & Duclos teamed up with the kids of Wigan Youth Zone to create a participatory mural in April 2024.

This project wasn't just about art, it was about empowering young minds, fostering creativity, and building connections between our two towns. Kids from Wigan had the chance to dive into drawing techniques and let their imaginations soar as they designed their dream houses featuring on the mural. The warmth and enthusiasm from the Wigan Youth Zone staff and the kids made this collaboration even more memorable. Now, the mural stands tall, a beautiful testament to the dreams and talents of our youth. Featuring elements and heritage sites from both Wigan and Angers, it's a celebration of our shared history and the close bond between our communities.
