Self confidence

This article was written by a young person from Wigan.

As a person who has always struggled with self confidence, I know what an issue this topic can be for people.

A lack of self confidence can be a real problem. It can make you feel worthless, inferior to other people and uncomfortable. It often grows from a lack of belief in your own abilities, looks, personality, etc. Low self confidence and low self esteem, therefore, go hand in hand.

Can it be overcome?

Yes. Many people find that, as they grow older, confidence comes to them more naturally. Others have to work on their confidence by putting themselves in situations they know they may not feel confident so that they can push themselves to develop confidence.

I used to always push myself to perform music in public, whether it was singing or playing the guitar etc. Every single time I battled with my self confidence, blushed and fumbled my way through the performance…but each time it grew easier.

One of the biggest sources of low self confidence is when both boys and girls feel that they do not look pretty or they are imperfect in some way. They compare themselves to models in magazines and feel that they cannot be confident in their looks. The fact is, that most of the pictures of models in magazines have been altered and/or they've had hours spent on them by make-up artists, hairstylists, etc. Their beauty is not natural, or lasting.

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”
Audrey Hepburn

Always remember that your worth is not based on what others think of you.
