Families will flock to Cycle Three Sisters on 7 May and 23 July

This year’s Cycle Three Sisters events are on track to be more popular than ever thanks to a new summer slot.

Be Well’s free bike bonanza is always one of the highlights of the calendar, with families flocking to Ashton-in-Makerfield’s Three Sisters Circuit to lap up a range of fun activities on and off the course.

More than a thousand people are expected at the first event of 2024, on Tuesday 7 May.

And while the second half of the annual double header has previously been staged in September, this time it will wave the starting flag on the school holidays, on Tuesday 23 July.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “We know how much local families love Cycle Three Sisters and we want as many people as possible to be able to come down and enjoy the fun!

“Our May events have always been incredibly popular, with families dropping by after school to ride on the circuit and enjoy all our other free activities. By moving our second outing to the first week of the school summer holidays, we hope even more residents will find it convenient to pop along to our celebration of cycling.”

As usual, cyclists of all ages and abilities will have the chance to ride their bikes on racetrack - while there’ll be cycle skills, balance bikes for under 5s, free bike services and family entertainment including a climbing wall, facepainting and more.

Bikes and helmets will be available to borrow free of charge and there will also be Wheels For All adapted bikes suitable for people with a range of disabilities.

Coun Ready added: “The truly brilliant thing about Cycle Three Sisters is that it’s an event for absolutely everyone – no matter your age or ability.

“Those who’ve been before will know just what to expect, but if you’ve yet to experience Cycle Three Sisters then please don’t miss out. We promise you’ll have a ‘wheely’ good time!”

The majority of activities will get underway from 3pm, although from 1.30pm there will be a chance for those with balance bikes, bikes with stabilisers and adapted bikes only to have a go on the main circuit – ideal for young children who need an adult to accompany them.

While these bikes won’t be permitted on the main track beyond 3pm, dedicated areas of the venue will be set aside for the remainder of the day (8pm finish).

Free parking is available on site but families who live locally are encouraged to walk or cycle to the event where possible.
