Borough will unite to remember sacrifices made during pandemic
Wigan Borough will come together to mark the National Day of Reflection for Covid-19 this week.
This year’s memorial is the first since the borough’s two dedicated spaces opened, with residents encouraged to pay a visit and show their respects this weekend.
Two short ceremonies will be held at the locations on Friday, ahead of the national day on Sunday 9th March.
The new bespoke facilities in Mesnes Field in Wigan and Lilford Park in Leigh were formally opened in autumn last year.
Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux MBE, said: “Ever since the pandemic we have seen it as a priority to remember and acknowledge the sacrifices made by so many across our borough during those challenging times.
“In consultation with our residents and partner organisations, we were able to shape our two dedicated spaces and were delighted that they opened to the public last year.
“We would encourage people to visit Mesnes Field and Lilford Park at any time of year, but particularly on Friday and Sunday, linked to the National Day of Reflection.
“These two sites offer the opportunity to relax and reflect and also remember those who are no longer with us.”
On Friday, 7th March, the Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Debbie Parkinson, will lead two short public ceremonies. Mesnes Field’s will start at 11.30am and Lilford Park’s from 2.30pm.
