Sporting success and a lookahead to RLWC

Sporting success and a lookahead to RLWC

Once again, it has been a wonderful few weeks of sporting success in our borough.

It was a pleasure to welcome Leigh Miners Rangers to Leigh Town Hall recently to celebrate their success in becoming the only community rugby league club to compete at Super League level.

As a council, we are really passionate about supporting local athletes through investment in facilities and initiatives such as the Believe Sports Talent Fund, and we wanted the team to know that we are right behind them on their journey to the top.

After receiving a flurry of nominations of deserving nominees for our Believe sports awards, entries have now closed.

I’d like to thank everyone for getting in touch to let us know the sports people they feel deserve recognition.

Shortlisted nominees will be celebrated at an awards ceremony later this year and we are looking forward to welcoming them.

In the spirit of celebrating our borough’s excellent sporting heroes, I’d like to congratulate Keely Hodgkinson on her recent 800m gold medal win at the European Championships.

She absolutely deserves her win and we’re so proud of her achieving the world champion status.

Community spirit has been coursing through Leigh in recent weeks with a number of brilliant events enjoyed by many of our residents.

The sun came out for the family fun day at Firs Park over the bank holiday weekend and people came out in their numbers to support Alzheimer Research by taking part in the memory walk at Pennington Hall Park.

There was more cause for celebration as the Leigh branch of the RAF Association, covering Leigh, Wigan, Bolton and Bury, celebrated their 75th anniversary with a family day in Mesnes Park a few weeks ago.

Visitors were treated to a Battle of Britain flyover from a spitfire which made for spectacular viewing.

Finally, last week, we celebrated 50 days until the Rugby League World Cup and announced that the National Lottery trophies tour will arrive in the borough on 30 September.

This marks the exciting countdown over the next 50 days to the biggest, best and most inclusive tournament in history with men’s, women’s and wheelchair games taking place at Leigh Sports Village.
