Countdown to the Coronation and Youth Hub success

Countdown to the Coronation and Youth Hub success

Following its official opening last month, the positive stories that are coming out of Leigh Youth Hub continue to grow and grow.

The new site, which is right next door to the stadium at Leigh Sports Village, offers a wide range of activities and courses for young people and it’s amazing to see the impact it is making already.

Its weekly open sessions on Thursday and Friday evenings are averaging an attendance of 75 and the new gym on site has already attracted 140 members.

Local organisations including the council, Wigan and Leigh College, the Department for Work and Pensions, Everything Human Rights community group and Wigan Youth Zone are also working in partnership with the hub to run programmes, advice sessions, or targeted youth groups for teenagers to get involved in throughout the week.

I would encourage anyone who is thinking of visiting to pop down to see first-hand what’s on offer and I should also say a big thank you to the youth steering group who have been there from the start to shape the plans.

We have recently announced plans to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in May with flagship events in Wigan and Leigh.

Residents are also invited to host their own street parties with the council covering the cost of road closure applications.

Last week we also provided an updated on our plans to establish two Covid-19 Places of Reflection in the borough.

We hope both sites in Wigan and Leigh will be ready to welcome visitors early next year.

It is important that we provide these spaces so everyone can acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions made during the pandemic and remember those who are no longer with us.

The designs have been influenced by the recent consultation with residents and we are grateful to everyone who gave us feedback on what is such an emotional project.

I would also like to issue a further reminder about the new voter ID rules that will be in use for the upcoming local elections in May.

These measures have been introduced by central government and a national awareness campaign is underway to highlight what forms of ID are accepted and what to do if you don’t have one of these so that you can still vote.
