Free parking, Borough Life and 16 days of action

Free parking, Borough Life and 16 days of action

December has arrived and the build-up to Christmas is well and truly underway.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the Frost Festival lantern parade through the town centre a few weeks ago and the popular Frost Feast that followed on Civic Square.

The festive fun doesn’t stop there though as we get closer to the big day. There is an artisan Christmas Market in Leigh on Saturday, December 16, on Bradshawgate between 10am and 4pm.

And of course, Leigh’s indoor market is an ideal spot to pick up gifts and get ahead with that important Christmas shopping. There’s also a busy schedule of events at the Spinning Gate Shopping Centre throughout the month, making it well worth a visit.

To complement all this, I would like to highlight that the free parking offer in the town centre has been extended.

All council owned car parks are free to park at the weekend, as they are throughout the year, but from now until early 2024, there’s also free parking after 3pm on weekdays.

It’s a scheme designed to help the borough’s independent businesses, encouraging everyone to support local at this important time of year. So, please take advantage of it over the coming weeks.

You may notice at the moment that Leigh Town Hall is lit up in red during the evening.

This is to show support for the campaigns to end gender-based violence, including Wigan Council’s own Love Is Not Abuse campaign.

We marked White Ribbon Day in November and will be sharing information and advice throughout the 16 days of action that have followed.

We all have a role to play in tackling domestic abuse and this time of year is an opportunity to raise awareness of the support available that can help those that are affected.

This month also sees a new edition of Borough Life, Wigan Council’s residents’ magazine, being delivered.

Please keep an eye out for it popping through your letterbox at home. You can also pick it up a copy from any public buildings such as our Life Centres, libraries, Leigh Town Hall and the Turnpike Gallery.
