Gas servicing

Wigan Council have a legal requirement to ensure that the gas appliances in your property are checked on an annual basis to ensure they are safe and working correctly. To do this we will carry out a gas safety check, these are carried out by our approved contractor Liberty.

Liberty will contact you directly when your appliances is due to be serviced to arrange a suitable appointment date. It is vital that all gas appliances are checked, as faulty gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gas safety checks are completed free of charge. It is essential that you allow access to your property so we can carry out these checks, failure to do so is a breach against your tenancy agreement and can lead to legal action.

In the unlikely event that your appliances have not been serviced within the last 12 months please contact Liberty to arrange 0330 333 5771 and email hello@liberty-group.co.uk.

There are quite a few simple things that can stop boilers from working that you may be able to do yourself without the need to book and wait for one of our engineers, these can be found on Liberty website (external links).

What to do if you smell gas

If you smell gas, need to report a gas leak, or require gas emergency services, phone the free, 24-hour National Gas Emergency Helpline 0800 111 999.

It’s crucial to act quickly in a gas emergency. These are the steps you need to take to stay safe:

  • Get fresh air immediately; make sure you open all doors and windows to ventilate the area
  • Turn off the appliance you are using
  • Turn off the gas emergency control valve at the meter unless the meter is located in a basement
  • Extinguish all naked flames and don’t smoke
  • Don’t operate electrical switches (including turning light switches on or off) because this can ignite escaping gas
  • If the attending emergency operative identifies an issue with any gas appliances, follow their advice concerning the use of the equipment. Where advised, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to fix the appliance and check it’s safe
  • If you’re feeling unwell, visit your GP or hospital immediately and let them know you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide
  • Don’t turn the gas supply on again until it’s been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
