These first steps courses allow learners to focus on the development of transferable and sector-related skills. As part of these courses, you will benefit from input from experts already working in these sectors. Additionally, we offer direct links to teams who can support with employment opportunities and in some cases guaranteed interviews.
This course is for those who would like to work in a caring role, this is an ideal course designed to equip you with the skills to enter this field. This course includes guaranteed interviews for all that complete it.
Course duration
Up to 18 weeks, 2.5 - 3 hours a week, term time only.
What will I learn?
This qualification provides an engaging and relevant introduction to vocational learning within the health and social care sector, allowing you to work on subjects such as:

- Communication in Health & Social Care
- Safeguarding Adults
- Working in a Person-centred way
This qualification will help you to develop the transferable skills, attributes and behaviours needed for you to progress to further study and ultimately to employment in Health and Social care roles.
In addition, all learners will develop key numeracy, literacy and ICT skills as appropriate.
How will I be assessed?
All units are internally assessed via a portfolio of work and your award is validated by Pearson Awarding Body.
Entry requirements
No previous experience, just a commitment to learn. You must be able to understand and follow spoken and written instructions in English and write in short paragraphs as a minimum.
Progression
These qualifications prepare learners for further learning at a higher level:
- Skills gained will help support you to progress to level 2 and any other future chosen course
- Demand for carers is currently high. On successful completion of this qualification, you will be provided with the opportunity to meet with Wigan Council’s ‘Care to Join Us’ team.
- Learners who do not already have a Level 2 in Maths, English or Level 1 in Digital Skills will be given the opportunity to enrol to these too.

Pearson Level 1 Introductory qualification in Business
This course is a great starting point if you are interested in working in an office, reception, customer service, administration or business support role.
You will build confidence, develop useful workplace skills and learn more about the types of tasks carried out in business and administration settings.

This is the course for those who are looking for a career in a beauty salon or self-employed, taught in a salon by an industry expert. Autumn term starts only.
Course duration:
30 weeks, 6 hours a week, term time only.
Venue: Sun and Beauty Rooms Salon, 432 Warrington Road, Goose Green, Wigan.
What will I learn?
The aim of this course is to prepare you for a career in beauty therapy. This qualification will develop your practical skills in how to provide eye lash and brow treatments, remove hair using waxing techniques, eye lash perming, skin tanning techniques, apply makeup, manicure and pedicure, and skin care.
You will learn:
- Health and safety practices in the salon
- Client care and communication in beauty related industries
- Provide manicure and pedicure treatments
- Makeup applications
- Provide eye lash and brow treatments
- Provide skin care
- Remove hair using waxing techniques
- Salon reception duties
- Apply skin tanning techniques
- Contribute to the effective running of business
- Provide eye lash perming
This qualification will help you to develop the transferable skills, attributes and behaviours needed for you to progress to further study and ultimately to employment. In addition, all learners will develop key numeracy, literacy and ICT skills as appropriate.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment activities will capture how you are progressing in the subject area. You will have 3 separate observations in manicure, pedicure, makeup, eye lash and brow treatments, skin care, skin tanning techniques, eye lash perming. There will also be 4 observations in waxing techniques, written assignments and exams. There are 54 credits on this course and 13 units to complete.
All units are internally assessed via a portfolio of work and your award is validated by Pearsons Awarding Body.
Entry requirements
No previous experience, just a commitment to learn. Previous completion of a level 1 course would be useful. You must be able to understand and follow spoken and written instructions in English and write in short paragraphs as a minimum. You will need to bring pen and paper, and will have to provide your own uniform (details will be given at the start of course).
Basic beauty materials will be supplied.

These qualifications prepare learners for further learning in related subjects and also at a higher level:
- Level 2 Nail Technology
- Level 2 Complementary Therapies
- Level 3 Beauty Therapy Massage
