Work is now well under way to transform part of the former Bickershaw Colliery into a new neighbourhood with up to 650 new homes, 1000 sqm of commercial space and a 40 berth canal marina at Pennington Wharf.
The marina is a superb place to moor your boat, offering quality inter-marine pontoons which are fully serviced. This is a great location with excellent cruising waters providing access to the national network.
For more information on the facilities and for any mooring enquiries, please contact British Waterways Marinas Ltd on 01257 481054.
Bickershaw North
The Bickershaw Country Park development proposals will provide much needed opportunities for recreation and leisure facilities for the local community. The overall site is approximately 247 hectares in size consisting of a mix of previously remediated colliery land and three large water bodies, Diggle Flash in the north, and Firs Flash and Nevison’s Flash in the south.
The landscape master plan aims to provide a site for informal recreation and passive activities that reflect the quiet nature of the area and respects its diverse natural assets.
An extensive network of informal footpaths, rights of way and bridleways offer a range of routes for walking, cycling and horse riding both within and beyond the site. Strategic routes, including the recently upgraded Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Bridgewater Canal towpaths, offer safe and off-road connectivity into the wider Greenheart network.
Conservation
Wigan Council, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and the Bickershaw Steering Group are continuing to work in partnership to ensure the area develops as one of the most important wildlife sites in Greenheart.
Jubilee Legacy Walks
To celebrate the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations of 2012, a series of 15 Legacy Walks were developed ranging from 1 to 9 miles. Each walk in Wigan Borough's green space is recognised by Silver, Gold and Diamond accreditation.
