The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works.
This bulletin is updated weekly and every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.
For any emergency work that has a major impact on the road network, we aim to notify members of the public via Wigan Council's social media pages as soon as possible.
Emergency Works
- Elliott Street, Tydlesley - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by Cadent Gas with temporary traffic signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 21st March 2025
- Church Lane, Lowton - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by Electricity North West with temporary traffic signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 24th March 2025.
Major Schemes
- Atherton Road, Hindley Green - Electricity Connection - Electricity North West will be supplying a new high voltage electricity supply to support the extension works at Hindley YOP. Works will start on 21st September and will be carried under rolling 2 way lights. The scheme will progress onto Leigh Road, Hindley Green, Thomas Street, East Street, Atherton Road, Brecon Drive and is due to conclude by March 2025
- St Helens Road, Leigh Cycleway Scheme - The Major Projects Team will be constructing segregated cycleway on St Helens Road, Leigh. Works will commence on 30th September 2024 and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2025. To keep disruption to a minimum and complete works as quickly as possible, a temporary northbound one-way restriction on St Helens Road is required, between Bonnywell Road and West Bridgewater Street. The southbound diversion will be Twist Lane - Atherleigh Way - St Helens Road. Local traffic will be able to use Spinning Jenny Way - Chapel Street - Mather Lane and Bonnywell Road as an alternative. - Wigan Road, Standish - Cadent Gas will be undertaking gas mains replacement works with the use of temporary 2-Way Signals. This involves replacing the existing Steel Gas Main with New PE Plastic mains for health and safety reasons. The scheme will be replacing 3000 meters of Gas Main alongside 224 associated connections and services. Works start on 03rd February 2025 and are due to conclude in May 2025. - Scholes / School Lane / Warrington Lane Junction, Wigan - Transport for Greater Manchester and Wigan Highways will be undertaking works to install controlled crossing facilities. Works will be undertaken with temporary multi-way signals in place, replacing the existing fixed signals. Works are due to start on 20th February 2025 and are estimated to be in place for 12 weeks.

- Mosley Common Road, Tyldesley - The Major Projects Team will be upgrading the A577 Mosley Common Road / A580 East Lancashire Road junction with additional traffic lanes and upgraded crossing facilities. Temporary Traffic Management will be in place from April 2025 to July 2025. Temporary traffic management will be required during construction, and this will change depending on works location. Resurfacing
- Platt Street, Platt Bridge will be closed at the Roundabout intersection at Platt Street and Liverpool Road on 25th and 26th March 2025 between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00 only
- Upholland Road, Billinge will be closed from Outside House Number 272 to its junction with Crank Road on 31st March 2025 to 4th April 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:00 only
- Southgate, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Pottery Terrace to its junction with Ormskirk Road on 12th May 2025 to 14th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00 only
- Manchester Road, Ince will be closed from Entrance to Walmsley Park to Lighting Column No.48 on 15th May 2025 to 17th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00 only.

- Bolton Road, Atherton will be closed from its junction with Mealhouse Lane to its junction with Bolton Old Road on 24th March 2025 to 26th March 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 00:00 only
- North Road, Atherton will be closed from outside House Number 333 to Bolton Highways Boundary (Platt Lane) on 16th April 2025 and 17th April 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Bickershaw Lane, Abram will be closed from outside House Number 162 to outside House Number 205 on 22nd April 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Wallgate, Wigan will be closed at the Railway Bridge on 28th April 2025 to 2nd May 2025 between the hours of 22:00 and 5:00
- Shuttle Street, Tyldesley will be closed outside House Number 183 on 12th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 23:00 only
- Woodhouse Lane, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Whitworth Way on 15th May 2024 between the hours of 19:00 and 22:00 only
- Winstanley Road, Ashton in Makerfield will be closed at the St Helen’s Borough Boundary on 21st May 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Wigan Road, Standish will be closed at its junction with Greenways, Standish on 9th June 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 23:00 only
- Kirkhall Lane, Leigh will be closed outside House Number 78 on 16th July 2025 to 17th July 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 04:00 only
- Rectory Lane, Standish will be closed at The Owls, Standish on 19th July 2025 to 10th August 2025
- Cross Street, Hindley will be closed at its junction with Albert Street, Hindley on 5th August 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Darlington Street East, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Rupert Street on 10th August 2025 between the hours of 09:00 and 15:00 only.

- Atherton Carnival 2025 - A number of roads will be closed on 22nd June 2025 in support of Atherton Carnival
- Aspull Churches Walking Day - A number of roads will be closed in support of Aspull Churches Walking Day 1st June 2025 between the hours of 14:00 and 15:00
- Bryn St Peter's C E Primary School Walking Day, Ashton in Makerfield - A number of roads will be closed on Sunday 29th June 2025 between the hours of 13:30 and 15:30 in support of Bryn St Peter's C of E Primary School Community Celebration Walking Day, Ashton in Makerfield.
