Qualified food officers from the Council are required to carry out inspections of food businesses. Latest inspection rating for Wigan’s food businesses can be searched on the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) food hygiene rating scheme website (external link).
Purpose of food hygiene inspections
The responsibility for controlling food safety rests with the proprietor of the food business. Food officers inspect all types of food businesses to make sure food is being handled and produced hygienically and the food is safe to eat. They will also identify any foreseeable risks of food poisoning or injury which might arise if the food is eaten.
The inspectors will carry out the following checks:
- your premises
- the kinds of food you make or prepare
- how you work
- your food safety management system
