Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Who are we?

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) works with schools, pupils and parents, alongside partner agencies, to ensure access to educational opportunities for all Ethnic Minority, Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and Showman children and young people in Wigan.

What do we do?

We provide support to schools, young people and families by:

  • Assisting parents with the admission process to find school places
  • Supporting pupils’ induction into school
  • Helping schools understand specific cultural needs of pupils who have come from other countries and cultures, including Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and Showmen
  • Providing direct teaching to help pupils learn English or to fill gaps in their learning, following a personalised assessment of their learning needs
  • Working in partnership with other agencies to support families
  • Providing comprehensive bespoke CPD for school staff or other professionals
  • Advising staff about effective EAL provision, classroom resources, and approaches to teaching and learning
  • Offering an interpreter booking service for schools and partner agencies.
