Social work practice

The Family Safeguarding model is designed to improve the way we work with our children and families, providing direct help to parents so they are better able to look after their children. The model has been independently evaluated as being very effective and has been praised by Ofsted.

Working together, our Wigan Children’s Social Care and Partner Agencies will take a whole family approach, making it easier for parents to access all the support they need from within one team. It is a new way of working with parents to try to get them the help they need in relation to substance misuse, domestic abuse and mental health which we know are the main issues that families often face. The overarching goal is that children will be more likely to be able to stay at home within their families if they get the right support at the right time. The parents needs will be considered and addressed, as well as the needs of the child; children's needs will always remain central to our work.

Family Safeguarding is based on the principle that the root causes of many children’s issues are linked to parental needs. Using strength-based practice and motivational interviewing we will work alongside children and their families to build strong foundations and develop resilience so that children thrive.
