Photo ID essential

If you are voting in person, you must bring an accepted form of photographic I.D with you to the polling station.

If you cannot produce an accepted form of photographic I.D to polling staff you will not be issued with a ballot paper.

Wigan Borough Constituencies

The Wigan Borough is represented by four MPs in total:

  • Wigan Constituency
  • Makerfield Constituency
  • Leigh and Atherton Constituency 
  • Worsley and Eccles Constituency.

Please note the Worsley and Eccles constituency is under the jurisdiction of the Acting Returning Officer appointed by Salford City Council. The former Astley & Mosley Common ward, (prior to ward boundary changes) falls under the Worsley & Eccles Constituency.

The poll card you have received will state which constituency you fall under.

Candidates

At the July 4th 2024 General Election voters will be given a choice of several candidates in their constituency.

The candidate that receives most votes becomes their Member of Parliament (MP).

This person will represent their constituency in the House of Commons for up to five years.

  • Parliament is dissolved (this means the current term has ended) - 30th May 
  • Notice Of Election Published no later than - 4th June 
  • Receipt Of Candidate Nominations Deadline - 7th June at 4pm.
  • Candidates Announcement of who is standing in this election: the evening of 7th June
  • Register To Vote Deadline - 18th June 
  • Application To Vote By Post Deadline - 19th June at 5pm
  • Application for Voter Authority Certificates - 26th June at 5pm
  • Application To Vote By Proxy - 26th June at 5pm
  • Polling Day - 4th July from 7am-10pm

FAQ’s about the General Election

Who decides when to call a general election?

The current (in power) government can decide when to call a general election.

Then, at the request of the Prime Minister, Parliament can be dissolved by the King which leads directly to a General Election being called.

My constituency has changed, who drew up the boundaries?

The Boundary Commission for England (BCE) is required by the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 1986 to review the parliamentary constituencies in England every 5 years.

BCE is an advisory non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (external link).

Wigan Council have no involvement whatsoever in drawing up the constituency boundaries.

Who are the candidates in my constituency?

You will only know who the candidates are after the deadline for nominations has passed, a list of the candidates who are standing - or 'Statement of Persons Nominated' – will be posted on this website and the councils social media platforms.

Can I vote for a new Prime Minister?

You can only vote to elect your local MP in a general election. You cannot vote for a new Prime Minister.
