The Zone Day Centre

A trip to The Museum Of Wigan Life

The Zone’ is an innovative service for adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and complex support needs.

The vibrant and contemporary space has been further enhanced with the inclusion of an immersive room and on sight sporting facilities. The aim of the Zone is to place people at the heart of the community by forging key partnerships with local organisations, offering a range of person-centered experiences that enhance wellbeing of individuals and their families / carer’s.

The Zone has consulted with customers, carers and staff to create its vision of a haven of friendship, choice and opportunity for ALL.

What does our day centre provide?

The Zone provides person centered support by a dedicated team of staff that strive to maintain and improve customer wellbeing.

We have strong links with the surrounding community and can offer a wide range of experiences that help customers to achieve their individual goals, this includes an immersive room and on sight sporting facilities.

We have our own chef and kitchen providing customers with bespoke meals that are tailored to everyone’s taste and needs. We also have a fully equipped hygiene suite on site.

Activities on offer

To help people stay healthy and independent, we offer a wide range of activities which are tailored around the needs of each person who attends the centre.

  • Thai Chi - This ancient Chinese tradition is practiced as a graceful form of exercise and involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner, accompanied by deep breathing
  • Boccia - Every Monday morning customers play Boccia and other activities with local school children from Landgate School. This is a precision sport contested at local, national and international levels, by athletes with severe physical disabilities. It was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy but now includes athletes with other severe disabilities affecting motor skills
  • Gardening - In partnership with Wigan Warriors, customers and carers from The Zone have access to a tranquil garden space that features many sensory elements that are of great benefit to the community. The garden allows for many joint activities that allow customers the opportunity to enjoy this unique outside space whilst also making new friendships
  • Holistic therapy - Our staff have trained to deliver holistic therapies and practices that treat the entire body and the whole person. This kind of therapy integrates spiritual, physical, mental and emotional forms of wellbeing, aiming to help individuals develop a deeper understanding of themselves on all these levels
  • Mindful walking - This is an effective way to clear the mind of clutter and restore your sense of focus, using all of your senses - sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch - to bring awareness to your body and surroundings
  • Immersive experiences - The immersive room offers a range of different virtual experiences to customers and is a fun way for customers to interact and learn. It's also available for community use.
  • Re-bound therapy - This is used to facilitate movement, promote balance, promote an increase or decrease in muscle tone, promote relaxation, promote sensory integration, improve fitness and exercise tolerance, and to improve communication skills
  • Cinema - In partnership with Empire Cinema, the Zone regularly visit the local cinema for a bespoke screening
  • Sensory nature trail - Our customers enjoy going on a local nature trail taking in the Leeds and Liverpool canal as well as local fishing ponds to discover wildlife and also exploring the different textures and colours of the outdoors
  • Art projects - We know that with the right guidance everybody can create their own art and we enjoy working with a range of materials to make unique pieces of art that we display to the public in the reception area at Robin Park.

Testimonies

Hear from Charles, a parent / carer who's daughter attends The Zone

Our daughter Helen attends The Zone Day Centre 5 days a week in normal circumstances and has been doing so for several years.

Helen uses the Wigan Council transport to travel to The Zone.

Previous to attending The Zone, Helen had received day centre care at Mayfield, and Broadmead centres.

The day care that Helen receives at The Zone is first class. We cannot praise highly enough the facilities and care Helen gets from the staff.

Helen needs a full care package, so we are very grateful for the attention Helen gets from the staff, which puts our minds at rest knowing she is very well cared for, and in a safe environment.

We are very pleased that Helen gets taken out, weather permitting, and can take part in other activities organised by the The Zone staff.

We are confident that Helen's welfare is more than being met, and if any situation arises, the staff will contact us immediately.

The full package of day care Helen receives from Wigan Council at The Zone, respite care at Coppull Lane, the transport, and all the associated staff we cannot fault, and as parents of Helen we are truly grateful.
