Hello, I’m Amelia
My Role: Community Link Worker
Where I work: Wigan Council.
What do I do in my role?
I support people if they are struggling with social issues that are affecting their health and wellbeing. I might help people make lifestyle changes or help them to access groups, activities and services in community.
What’s my career journey?
GCSE’S then A-levels at college. I then went to university and studied a degree in a non-health subject and ended up working in local government and finance for a few years.
My dream was always to work in health and support people, so I used my life experience skills and volunteering experience alongside my transferable work skills to apply for a career change into the NHS and here I am!
What’s the best thing about my job?
Meeting so many different people and helping to make a difference to how people feel and helping them work on improving their quality of life.
What do I want to do next?
I would like to progress in my career in the next 18 months hopefully to help plan and improve the work we do in health and wellbeing for the future or training staff in the work we do in community.

My advice
Take as much extra help as you need, such as study support and extra lessons to help pass exams. Volunteer and complete work experience in health and social care. Spend time doing things that you love and are passionate about, your hobbies or interests can help you develop skills employers love and is brilliant for managing your own wellbeing.
