Main roles and responsibilities of the Lead Member
- To support the delivery of the Deal 2030 priorities and pledges in the Wigan Council Recovery Plan
- To drive forward the Community Wealth and Health Building approach including increasing the community use and control of council owned land and assets, particularly those which are under-utilised to build back fairer in Wigan
- To support the delivery of our Climate Change Strategy, including building on community pride and working together with communities to create a cleaner, greener borough
- To develop and improve Leisure Services across the borough to deliver the best outcomes for our residents.
Priorities for 2023/2024
- Adopt and embrace the approach and commitment to build back fairer and accelerate the recovery of our borough
- Implementation of the key priorities set out in our Deal 2030 - Our Place, Our People, Our Future
- Maintaining the borough’s improvement in Healthy life expectancy
- Implementing Health Improvement transformation
- Implementation of the next phase of Heart of Wigan –the borough’s integrated whole life course population health programme
- Mental Wellbeing- working in partnership with GMMH to improve mental wellbeing
- Assurance of the implementation of new integrated health improvement services embedding across all clinical pathways
- Implementing new Drugs and Alcohol national targeted investment programmes
- Neighbourhood targeting to address the Borough’s internal inequalities gap.
- Healthy Active Ageing
- Blend, shape and implement the future vision of Be Well leisure and wellbeing services to increase and sustain the proportion of residents active and healthy
- Embed inclusive Leisure and Wellbeing activities into the lives of the people of the Wigan Borough in a variety of settings
- Deliver a sports and physical activity local delivery pilot to improve physical health and wellbeing and address inequalities in our communities
- Sexual Health Services stage 2 implementation
- Oral health - focus on reducing DMFTs in 0-5yrs old
- Continue the implementation of the Start Well new delivery model (Shared with Portfolio holder for Children and Young People)
- Protecting the Public’s Health including:
- Maintaining and sustaining the borough’s ability to respond to outbreaks of communicable diseases
- Delivery of the council’s responsibilities under the new National Contain Framework for Covid response and recovery
- Developing the council’s and Healthier Wigan Partnerships capacity and capability to develop community and system resilience for prevention in health protection.
